Summer is one of the best times of the year! Sunshine, family gatherings, vacations, gardening, and more time outdoors. As we get older, our bodies handle heat, sun, and activity a little differently than they used to. Below, you'll find tips and tricks to make sure you stay safe this summer!
1. Protect Yourself from Heat
Adults over 65 are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses like dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
Smart Heat Safety Tips:
Drink water consistently (even if you’re not thirsty)
Avoid outdoor activity during peak heat (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.)
Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing
Use air conditioning or visit cooling centers during extreme heat
Check medications, some prescriptions increase heat sensitivity
If you take blood pressure medications or diuretics, heat can impact how your body responds. Always talk with your doctor if you notice dizziness, weakness, or confusion.
2. Guard Your Skin
As we age, our skin becomes thinner and more sensitive to sun damage.
Sun Protection Basics:
Use broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses
Reapply sunscreen every two hours outdoors
Schedule annual skin checks
3. Stay Ahead of Dehydration
Many adults over 65 don’t feel thirst as strongly as they once did. That means dehydration can sneak up quickly.
Warning signs include:
Dry mouth
Fatigue
Dark urine
Headache
Muscle cramps
4. Keep Moving (Safely)
Summer is a wonderful time to stay active, which supports heart health, mobility, and mental well-being.
Great low-impact summer activities:
Morning or evening walks
Water aerobics
Swimming
Gardening
Outdoor tai chi or yoga
Programs like SilverSneakers are often included in certain Medicare Advantage plans and can give you access to gyms or fitness classes at little to no cost. If you’re unsure whether your plan includes this benefit, it’s worth checking.
5. Fun & Safe Summer Activities
Staying social and engaged is just as important as staying physically healthy.
Here are a few safe and enjoyable ideas:
Visit Local Parks
Early morning picnics, shaded walking trails, or outdoor concerts can be a great way to enjoy nature without overheating.
Family Gatherings
Summer barbecues and reunions are wonderful, just remember to:
Sit in shaded areas
Stay hydrated
Take breaks indoors if needed
Travel Smart
If you’re traveling:
Keep medications in your carry-on
Bring a medication list
Know where urgent care facilities are located
Make sure your coverage travels with you (especially important if you have a Medicare Advantage plan)
6. Know What Your Medicare Covers
Summer is also a great time to review your preventive care:
Annual wellness visits
Screenings
Vaccinations
Blood pressure and cholesterol checks
Original Medicare (Parts A & B) and Medicare Advantage plans both cover preventive services, but the way you access them may differ.
Understanding your benefits helps you avoid surprise costs and stay proactive about your health.
Enjoy the Season, Safe & Smart
I always tell my clients: Medicare isn’t just about coverage; it’s about protecting your health and independence. Summer should be about making memories, not medical emergencies.
A little preparation goes a long way:
Stay cool
Stay hydrated
Stay active
Stay informed about your coverage
If you’re unsure whether your plan includes fitness benefits, travel coverage, or preventive services, now is a great time to review it, Here’s to a safe, healthy, and joyful summer season.
